The following statement on behalf of the environment was supposed to have been made by Chief Sealth (Seattle) in reply to President Franklin Pierce in December, 1854. This summer, several of us faculty met and discussed about the Vision, Mission and Educational Objectives of our Civil Engineering Department. It is always exciting to look back at the origins, to look for a future direction, to assess where we are and to envision where we would like to be: 10, 15, 20 years from now. And yes, we even went back to the meaning of the word ENGINEER ... which has its origins in the Latin word INGENIUM, meaning “innate quality, especially mental power, hence a clever invention.” This is why in many foreign languages "engineer" starts with an "i", e.g.: ingeniero (Spanish), ingénieur (French), ingenieur (German) and the list goes on. On February 18, 2009; Deans of the Colleges of Engineering at Cal Poly Pomona, CSU Chico and CSU Long Beach signed a Memorandum of Understanding that outlines plans for collaboration between the three Universities through participation in the California Pavement Preservation Center (CP2C). The Center was established initially at CSU Chico and is funded primarily by Caltrans. The Cal Poly Pomona Office will offer technical assistance, training and research in pavement preservation to public agencies and contractors in Southern California.
