STΣMS: Students’ Experiences in Math and Science Study

Dear Dr. Dragos,

I am writing to invite your Engineering students to participate in a study about their experiences in the major. We have one that is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and is approved by CPP IRB Protocol #10-138 for research with human participants.This study is for students who have at least 2 years left here at Cal PolyPomona. We have another study for students in all grade levels and is approved by CPP IRB Protocol #11-117 for research with human participants.

I am a Research Assistant for Dr. Bettina Casad, a Psychology Professor at Cal Poly Pomona and the Principal Investigator on the project. In the STΣMS: Students’ Experiences in Math and Science Study, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math students from Cal Poly Pomona will complete a series of online questionnaires, interviews, and lab sessions over the next 2 years. Participants will be paid $85-$205 over the course of 2 years for their participation for this longitudinal study. For the other engineering study, students will complete an online questionnaire as well.

To share these opportunities with your students, we would like to visit your course title, e.g., BIO 101 class that meets on day of week and day of week at timesin room ______ to make a very brief announcement at the beginning or the end of your class. If this fits your schedule, please let us know which day and time work best for you.

Neal deserves a big poster in our concrete lab. Ever wondered who took care that students will have enough aggregate for the lab? Neal did, sacrificing weekends and lunch breaks to come on campus and re-fill our supply of sand and gravel.

Ever wondered who provides the admixtures we use in concrete lab? Ever wondered who helps out our concrete canoe team? But how many of you participated in the field trips to the CEMEX plant in Orange? Remember who your guide was?

Neal always said yes when we asked for help. He is Senior Quality Control Manager at CEMEX, a great company that has helped us and our students on many occasions. Neal deals with concrete mix design and testing on a daily basis. At nights, you might see Neal in concrete lab, teaching part-time for CE and CET.

Ask him all you want to know about concrete, but in the end, don't forget to say ... thank you.

SMART Scholarship Program

Dear California Polytechnic Pomona Administrators:

I write to make you aware of a tremendous scholarship-for-service opportunity for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students and to request that you encourage your best students to apply to the SMART Scholarship Program. This is a highly-selective, prestigious, national program that fully supports their education, including full tuition, a very generous stipend, book allowance, and Summer internship, while they are in school, and then provides guaranteed employment with the Defense Department upon graduation.

The Science, Mathematics, And Research for Transformation (SMART) scholarship-for-service Program fully funds undergraduate and graduate degrees in a wide range of technical areas, including all fields of engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Brain and Cognitive Sciences, and Mathematics.

A SMART brochure and a poster are attached and the application web page is at www.asee.org/SMART. The application deadline is December 1, 2011 for the 2012 school year. SMART provides:

· Full Tuition – to any accredited U.S. University

· A very generous stipend while in school

- $25,000 for undergraduates

- $33,000 for masters candidates

Summer internships at Labs are required. In return for fully funding their education, students are required work as a civilian employee at a Service (Army, Navy, Air Force) or DoD Agency (NSA, DIA, DARPA, etc.) laboratory, or other research and development activity for a period equal to the time the program paid for their school. Students must be U.S. Citizens, able to obtain a DoD Security Clearance, and be willing to work as a civilian in the DoD upon graduation.

NASA DEVELOP Internship Program 2011

Call for Fall 2011 Interns : All degree levels (Bachelors, Masters, PhD) are welcome to apply.

DEVELOP is a NASA Science Mission Directorate Applied Sciences Training and Development Program. Students work on earth science research projects, mentored by science advisors from NASA and partner agencies to extend research results to local communities. The projects demonstrate to community leaders and organizations how NASA science measurements and predictions can be used to address local policy issues.

Past projects at DEVELOP JPL include ecological forecasting and studies of the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill, natural hazard assessments of Los Angeles earthquakes and fires, air quality monitoring, and coastal wetland and sea level monitoring using remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS). DEVELOP students have had the opportunity in the past to do oral presentations of their research and network at such conferences as the American Geophysical Union (AGU), The American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS), The American Meteorological Society (AMS), The Council of State Governments (CSG), at NASA Langley Research Center, and at NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC.

I am pleased to inform you that the NASA DEVELOP Program has been selected to receive the prestigious NASA Group Achievement Award for 2011. DEVELOP students are challenged to think “outside the box,” take initiative, employ innovative ideas, gain valuable management and leadership experience, and gain experience in delivering results to officials in government, academia, and industry, thereby extending the benefits of NASA science and technology to the public. Ultimately, DEVELOP students are better prepared to handle environmental science challenges that face our society and future generations.

Interns work in student teams to complete rapid research projects in 10 weeks using NASA remote sensing data and other data sources.

DEVELOP has opportunities nationwide, but we are actively recruiting for Fall 2011 interns at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, CA.

Fall 2011 applications must be postmarked by August 8, 2011. It is not too late to apply! Applications are available through our website at: http://develop.larc.nasa.gov/

Internships are paid. Rate varies by educational attainment level. Fall 2011 students are expected to work a maximum of 20 hours per week, and will begin on September 12, 2011 and end on November 18, 2011.

The Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) of the Transportation Research Board (TRB), National Academies, is pleased to announce the Graduate Research Award Program on Public-Sector Aviation Issues for the 2011/2012 academic year. This program, sponsored by the U.S. DOT Federal Aviation Administration and administered by the ACRP, is designed to encourage applied research on airport and related aviation system issues and to foster the next generation of aviation community leaders. Under the program, up to 10 awards of $10,000 each will be made to full-time graduate students for successful completion of a research paper on public-sector airport-related aviation issues during the upcoming academic year. Candidates must be full-time students enrolled in a graduate degree program at an accredited institution of higher learning during the 2011/2012 academic year. Successful papers will be presented at the January 2013, TRB Annual Meeting; and exceptional papers could be published in a subsequent TRB Transportation Research Record. In 1854, the United States Government offered to buy two million acres of Native American land in the Pacific Northwest. The following statement on behalf of the environment was supposed to have been made by Chief Sealth (Seattle) in reply to President Franklin Pierce in December, 1854. It has been described as the most beautiful and prophetic statement on the environment ever made.
Note: There is some controversy about whether or not these words were exactly what the Chief said, but the words still hold a lot of wisdom, so I'd like to think they are true.

The Great Chief in Washington sends word that he wishes to buy our land. The Great Chief also sends us words of friendship and good will. This is kind of him, since we know he has little need of our friendship in return. But we will consider your offer.

How can you buy or sell the sky, the warmth of the land? The idea is strange to us. If we do not own the freshness of the air and the sparkle of the water, how can you buy them?

Every part of this earth is sacred to my people. Every shining pine needle, every sandy shore, every mist in the dark woods, every clearing, and every humming insect is holy in the memory and experience of my people. The sap which courses through the trees carries the memories of the red man. So, when the Great Chief in Washington sends word that he wishes to buy our land, he asks much of us...

This we know: All things are connected. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the sons of the earth. Man did not weave the web of life; he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself. But we will consider your offer to go to the reservation you have for my people. We will live apart, and in peace.

One thing we know, which the white man may one day discover - our God is the same God. You may think now that you own Him as you wish to own our land: but you cannot.

He is the God of man; and His compassion is equal for the red man and the white. This earth is precious to Him and to harm the earth is to heap contempt on its Creator. The whites too shall pass; perhaps sooner than all other tribes. Continue to contaminate your bed, and you will one night suffocate in your own waste.

But in your perishing you will shine brightly, fired by the strength of the God who brought you to this land and for some special purpose gave you dominion over this land and over the red man. That destiny is a mystery to us, for we do not understand when the buffalo are all slaughtered, the wild horses are tamed, and the view of the ripe hills blotted by talking wires. Where is the thicket? Gone. Where in the eagle? Gone. And what is it to say goodbye to the swift pony and the hunt? The end of living and the beginning of survival. If we agree, it will be to secure the reservation you have promised. There, perhaps, we may live out our brief days as we wish. When the last red man has vanished from the earth, and his memory is only the shadow of a cloud moving across the prairie, these shores and forests will still hold the spirits of my people. WTS-LA Resume Book

Interested in a career in the transportation industry? Submit your resume for the 2010 WTS-LA Transportation Resume Book!

WTS-LA will be accepting resumes from undergraduate and graduate students, both male and female, who are graduating in 2010 and seeking full-time employment in the transportation field after graduation. The deadline for resume submission was originally Friday, March 12, 2010, but has been extended to Friday, March 19, 2010.

The resume book will be distributed in CD format throughout the first week of April to our WTS-LA sponsors for use in their employee recruitment process. WTS-LA sponsors include transportation agencies responsible for the most interesting projects in Southern California, and consulting firms involved in local and national projects.

Dear Department Chair :
We are announcing a unique grant opportunity for your department’s faculty and students - EPA’s P3 - People, Prosperity and the Planet - Program. Through this design competition, student teams and their faculty advisors apply for $10,000 grants to design scientific, technical, and policy solutions to sustainability challenges in the developed or developing world.

The challenge addressed by these projects can be in any of these areas:
• energy,
• built environment,
• materials & chemicals,
• agriculture, or
• water.

Past P3 teams have explored more efficient ways to produce biofuels, developed simple water treatment technologies for developing communities, produced a technology to measure real-time energy use in buildings, reduced hazardous substance use in laboratories through improved information and purchasing practices, designed and built an educational “learning barge” for the Elizabeth River, VA , and designed an innovative system for the bioremediation of agricultural chemicals.

Teams use the $10,000 grants to design and develop their projects throughout the 2010/2011 school year. Then in the spring of 2011, all teams will come to Washington, DC, to compete for EPA’s P3 Award at the 7th Annual National Sustainable Design Expo. The students’ projects will be evaluated by a panel of experts convened by the American Association for the Advancement of Science in all relevant fields, including sustainability. EPA will use these recommendations to choose the P3 Award winners who will be eligible for an additional grant up to $75,000 to further develop their designs, implement them in the field, and take them to the marketplace.
Applications are due by January 5, 2010.

First International Conference on Pavement Preservation

The ICPP will bring together researchers and experts working in the field of pavement preservation to exchange ideas and discuss critical issues and concerns. Civil Engineers are Ingenious Again ...

This summer, several of us faculty met and discussed about the Vision, Mission and Educational Objectives of our Civil Engineering Department. It is always exciting to look back at the origins, to look for a future direction, to assess where we are and to envision where we would like to be: 10, 15, 20 years from now.

And yes, we even went back to the meaning of the word ENGINEER ... which has its origins in the Latin word INGENIUM, meaning “innate quality, especially mental power, hence a clever invention.” This is why in many foreign languages "engineer" starts with an "i", e.g.: ingeniero (Spanish), ingénieur (French), ingenieur (German) and the list goes on. So in our process of searching for a vision, we first rediscovered the meaning of the word engineer: INGENIOUS. How would you like to study Civil Ingenuity instead of Civil Engineering?

The next step was to formulate a mission and educational objectives - the things that we would like you, our students, to master once you graduate from the program. Meeting after meeting we narrowed down the list of objectives and agreed on a mission statement. I will only reproduce the mission statement here for you:

"To meet the challenges of an evolving society, we provide a practice-oriented civil engineering education that fosters personal, professional and social responsibility; technical excellence and creativity; and effective communication, teamwork and leadership"

However, one thing was still on the table for discussion: our vision. After several other meetings and constructive debates, the faculty agreed on a simple, ambitious and, in my opinion, noble vision. To provide you, our students, with:

THE BEST CIVIL ENGINEERING LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Not number 2, not number 3, the best. Are we there yet? No, but that's where we want to be. Let's all get our "i"'s back and be ingenious again!

California Pavement Preservation Center at Cal Poly Pomona

On February 18, 2009; Deans of the Colleges of Engineering at Cal Poly Pomona, CSU Chico and CSU Long Beach signed a Memorandum of Understanding that outlines plans for collaboration between the three Universities through participation in the California Pavement Preservation Center (CP2C). The Center was established initially at CSU Chico and is funded primarily by Caltrans. The Cal Poly Pomona Office will offer technical assistance, training and research in pavement preservation to public agencies and contractors in Southern California. Here are two potential topics for graduate student research:

1. Performance of cold in-place recycled asphalt concrete (CIR). The study will likely include: literature review, analysis of laboratory test results, evaluation of existing CIR pavements, cost/performance comparison with traditional pavement rehabilitation strategies.

2. Characterization of Rapid Set Concrete (RSC) for Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design. The study will likely include: literature review, analysis of laboratory test results, evaluation of existing RSC pavements, pavement analysis with MEPDG and CalME software packages.
